The Science of Merino Wool Activewear: Performance, Comfort & Responsible Innovation

As the activewear market has become more performance-driven as well as required sustainability, merino wool, as one of balanced fabrics, makes its entrance into this market and captures players' attention. At ISPO 2024, Arabella Clothing has found it appeared in ISPO Award. It was applied not only in winter sports gears, but also in daily activewear like sports bras, leggings and running jackets, even swimwear. However, merino wool still hasn't been widely accepted in the activewear market yet due to its price, longer producing time and customers' little awareness of it, even though there are already a few top-tier activewear brands like lululemon and NIKE that have started building their performance wool collections.

As a pioneer activewear manufacturer, Arabella Clothing noticed that for any premium activewear or fitness wear brands, understanding the true potential of merino wool is no longer optional—it's a competitive advantage. Lucky for us, we just finished our second lesson about merino wool from our fabric supplier and we would like to share more about merino wool activewear with you in this blog.

Why Merino Wool is Redefining Activewear Today?

In our earlier blog on June 6th, 2025 ( Arabella News | Will Merino Wool Take Place of Traditional Activewear Material? Weekly Brief News June 9th-June 15th ) , a study of North Carolina University had demonstrated the outstanding performance of merino wool. It delivers an outstanding equilibrium in managing human body's heat and moisture naturally, as well as odor-resistance, which makes it become an alternative biodegradable and renewable material for activewear brands that are looking to elevate their product lines with premium, sustainable performance collection.

However, to understand its true value, Arabella Clothing will share with you more secrets about merino wool's performance and what is more important is how to select the best merino wool blend material for your activewear collections.

What makes Merino Wool the finest wool for Activewear?

1. Fiber Fineness & Fabric Production: the Secret behind comfort

Fiber fineness, as one of qualities of wool, defines its next-to-skin feel. So, first thing first, only wool fibers below 23 microns are classified as "Merino wool." The word "merino" originated from a Spanish official inspectors who oversees flocks and it became a connotation of "luxury quality"in wool overtime.

The on-body feel differs among wool fabrics due to different fiber fineness, which lies in their micron count. Simultaneously, the finer the fiber, the softer it is against the skin. Normally, fibers below 16.5-15 microns are considered ultra-fine, offering a near "no-itch"experience.

Wool's softness is influenced by 2 key factors: one is fiber fineness we mentioned, another one is garment contact area. Thus, one of the suggestions from Arabella Clothing is that selecting the right micron range and constructing your garment in a corresponding fit are essential for activewear developers.

Wool blended fabric has 2 types of spinning systems when you select them: woollen and worsted. Generally, wool contents below 30% are more likely woollen, thus the price is cheaper and suitable for coats and sweaters, while wool contents above 30% wool are basically worsted. And most of active wear is using worsted wool, which is smooth, more durable enough for active wear.

2. Merino Wool's moisture management: "quick-drying" or "moisture-wicking"?

Moisture-wicking and quick-drying are basic qualities for common activewear fabrics. However, when you see a merino wool fabric is described as "quick-drying" or "moisture-wicking" on an activewear garment, be careful; neither of the two qualities is precise.

Unlike conventional synthetic fabrics in activewear, merino wool's moisture behavior is one-way moisture transfer. It can absorb moisture vapor while keeping the skin feeling dry and locking the air in garments dynamically to stabilize human body's moisture and temperature during physical activities, which also makes it the best choice for high-intensity outdoor sports like marathon or skiing. Comparing to the words like "sweat-wicking" or "quick-dry", it will be better to describe it as "breathable with better moisture managing".

How to Select Merino Wool Fabrics for Activewear?

1. Weight Grams: Designed for versatile activities

Wool blend fabrics can only apply to winter sportswear-this is a stereotype. On the contrary, merino wool easily adapts to different activity levels and environments, making it highly versatile across activewear categories. Here are some classifications of recommended weight grams, characteristics and wool contents for different activities.

When it comes to pick corresponding performance fabrics for activewear, fabric weights, color fastness, hand-feels, ventilation and moisture management as well as stretch levels are basic factors. But merino wool requires more details like blends and pilling levels due to its natures. Generally, if you want to create a luxury wool collection, fabrics suppliers should provide their fabric testing reports of these factors we mentioned.

Arabella Clothing will make a simple guide on how to choose the best merino wool fabrics for your activewear.

Care Guide: How to Extend your Wool-based Activewear Longevity?

Creating wool-based activewear garments requires specialized expertise. What brands need to know is that as one of natural material for performance, merino wool has its special caring procedure. To maintain performance and durability, brands and consumers should follow proper care methods. here are some key considerations for you.

1. Temperature

Wool’s optimal processing temperature should be around 125°C (257℉) and avoid exceeding 150℃(302°F). When it comes to ironing and dyeing, it is highly recommended to control your temperature to prevent the fiber damage or deformation. If ironing, it should be done with a protective cloth layer.

2. Color & Dyeing

As for color selection and dyeing, we suggest to use low-saturation colors due to its unstable fiber structure as well as temperature.

3.Washing & Drying

It is recommended to use machine wash under the condition of gentle cycle instead of hand wash due to the fiber breakage. Simultaneously, air dry inside out for high wool content garments and avoid high heat drying.

Certification: How to Ensure that My Merino Wool Collection is Ethical and Sustainable?

To make your wool collection ethical and convincing, here are some qualifications when you choose wool fabrics.

- RWS (Responsible Wool Standard)

This qualification focuses on animal welfare and traceability, which is in pursuit of non-tail-cutting wool, non-chemical farm and traceable documents from farm to retailers. It has a higher acceptance on the market so far.

RWS

- Woolmark

This is focusing on wool content. It requires wool over 30% in garment production. If you are building a wool activewear collection with higher content of wool, this certification is suitable for you.

As the industry moves toward more responsible innovation, merino wool is no longer just an alternative. It is becoming a cornerstone of next-generation activewear. Working with a professional activewear manufacturer or fitness wear supplier who understands this material is essential to unlocking its full potential.
